Current Issues in Theology

The purpose of the articles link to this page is to examine current issues in theology.

The field of contemporary theology includes, though is not limited to:

Liberalism, Fundamentalism, Neo-orthodoxy, Pentecostalism, Evangelicalism, Neo-Liberalism, Contemporary Catholic Theology, Charismatic Theology, Process Theology, Secular Theology, Theology of Hope, Success Theology, Third Wave Theology, Liberation Theology, Feminist Theology, Dominion Theology, and Postmodern Theology.

Every Christian Bible student needs to study contemporary theology. Not all contemporary theologies approach the concepts of God, Christ, man, sin, and salvation merely from a traditional viewpoint, but seek to integrate them with reason and science.

Some conservative scholars allege that liberal theology’s emphasis on human reason and the scientific method can be seen in its abandonment of historic Christian doctrines. While this has undoubtedly led some liberal theologians to deny the miracles of the Bible because they were not in harmony with human reason and the findings of modern science, this is by no means a fair representation of progressive theology in general.

This, of course, emphasizes the why it is important to present the truth of the Bible in the context of current scientific and philosophical thinking, while at the same time affirming the historical and varied traditions of Christian theology.

For several years I enjoyed teaching contemporary theology to graduate students at Beacon University. I continue today to teach three survey courses in the Systematic Theology Department of the Biblical Theology Division at Christian Life School of Theology-Global. These articles are mostly based on my lectures.

These lecture series enabled my students to list and identify the truths concerning selected contemporary theologies and to explain why the study of contemporary theology is necessary for a sound biblical theology.

Given the truths concerning the major divisions of contemporary theology, students were able to demonstrate how these modern theological disciplines affect the Christian church’s worship and practice.

The students were able to correlate the nature, scope, and effect modern theological trends with biblical theology. Finally, my students were able to critically evaluation of how these contemporary theology affect the modern church.

In my graduate class on Contemporary Theology taught at Beacon University I used the outstanding textbooks by Grenz & Olson and by Vanhoozer. I highly recommend these to all serious students of modern and postmodern theological issues.
