Explore the History of Christianity

The history of Christianity is the remarkable story of the single largest religion in the history of the world.

For 2,000 years Christianity has dominated the hearts, minds and self-image of western civilization. It’s been one of the great players in world history, inspiring faith, but also squalid politics.

This is an epic story starring a cast of extraordinary people... From Jesus himself and the first apostles, to empresses, kings and popes... From reformers and champions of human conscience to crusaders and sadists.

Human history shows that religious belief can transform us for good or ill. It has brought human beings to acts of criminal folly as well as the highest achievements of goodness and creativity.

For many years I have had the privilege of teaching the History of Christianity as part of the Continuing Education program at Columbus State University. This continues to be one of the most popular and well attended classes that I teach. It engages a diverse group of students in lively discussion; including committed follower of Jesus, adherents of other great world religions, agnostics and professing atheists. I have also presented this material to church groups from Presbyterian, to Unitarian, to Pentecostal.

I am pleased to offer a series of articles selected from my lectures that will inform and inspire you in both your personal and group Bible study.

For my courses at Columbus State University I use Oxford University Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch's outstanding work, Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years as the principal textbook.

In addition to MacCulloch's text, I use his award winning BBC documentary series in the classroom.

I have also listed additional books and resources that have enriched my own study of the remarkable story of the origins and development of Christianity.

“Measured by its effects, Christianity has become the most potent single force in the life of mankind.”

Dr. Kenneth Scott Latourette (1884-1968), Sterling Professor of Missions and Oriental History at Yale University.

The story of Jesus is told every day in churches, homes and cathedrals around the globe. Yet there is another story, not as well-known: the story of the men and women behind the world’s most powerful faith. This is the story, not of Christ, but the story of Christianity.

This is the story of a religion that starts as a tiny Jerusalem sect and goes on to triumph over the world.

The articles I have written for this website explore the some of the less well known chapters in the extraordinary story of an extraordinary faith. Many of these topics answer questions most frequently asked by students in my classes.
