The Meaning of Faith

In The Meaning of Faith eStudy Guide by Dr. Ian Bond you will gain an understanding of faith that is Biblical and balanced?

Jesus teaches that through faith, the things that are possible to God are made equally possible to the one who believes.

The Christian life is a life of faith; spiritual warfare is the fight of faith; by faith we are healed and made whole; the Christian walks by faith not by sight. Without faith it is impossible to please God. This seminar will give you an understanding of the meaning of faith that is Biblical and balanced.

Topics covered in the eStudy Guide:

* The Supreme Importance of Faith

* Faith as a Gift

* Faith as a Fruit

* Faith to Live By

* How Faith Comes

Faith to Live By: The Supreme Importance of Faith

Hebrews 11:6—"Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."

Matthew 19:26—"With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Mark 9:23—“Everything is possible for him who believes.”

Word Study

Noun: pistis, conviction of the truth of anything

Verb: pisteuo, to think to be true, to be persuaded of, to credit, place confidence in.

“In primitive Christianity πίστις became the leading term for the relation of man to God.” (Kittel)

Faith Is a Substance

Hebrews 11:1—“Now faith is being sure (KJV: substance) of what we hope for and certain (KJV: evidence) of what we do not see.”

Key word: hupostasis; from a compound of hupo, under and histemi, to stand.

* That which stands under or provides the basis for something else.

See Hebrews 1:3—"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being (hupostasis)…"

* Faith is the underlying reality (substance) of what we hope for.

* Faith is real.

Faith Relates To the Invisible

Key word: elegchos, conviction, certain persuasion; evidence for, proof.

“If we are to name a convincing subject, it can only be God, A faith which of itself contained or offered proof of things unseen would not be the faith of Hebrews, which stands on the revelation, Word and promise of God and has nothing but what it receives. Thus faith is confidence in what is hoped for, since it is the divinely given conviction of things unseen.” Kittel)

* It is evidence of things not seen.

* Faith takes us behind the visible to the invisible; to the underlying reality by which the whole universe was formed (see Hebrews 11:3).
